Sinkhole at County Landfill Necessitates Quick Action by Public Utilities

A sinkhole that developed on Dec. 15th at Hillsborough County's Southeast County Landfill is receiving attention from County authorities, the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection, US Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County. A final version of a response plan for remediating the impact of the sinkhole, repairing the clay liner and monitoring ground and surface water will be submitted to FDEP by close of business Dec. 22nd. Berms and stormwater piping have been installed to divert stormwater away from the sinkhole area. The total size of the hole, including cracks in the earth surrounding it, is 108 feet, with the hole itself 80 feet in diameter.
