The pages on this site provide information about lakes that residents are managing as part of the Lake and Stream Management Program.

The Lake and Stream Management Program helps residents on lakes and streams in unincorporated Hillsborough County develop adaptive management strategies to keep lakes and streams healthy and useful. By participating in the program residents receive access to expertise and resources to help them in the process. Because every water body is unique, and systems can vary widely across the county, the program focuses on site-based management. This means there is no one-size-fits-all approach and residents must play an active role in the process.

The program offers various levels of involvement so you can tailor your participation to suit the needs of your lake or stream.

Lake Monitoring

Residents on lakes who have access to a boat can volunteer to take monthly samples on the lake. The program provides the training, equipment, and analysis. Because the program contracts Florida Lakewatch to facilitate this, volunteers also receive special access to Lakewatch program experts and opportunities. The information learned from the samples helps us understand the conditions of the lake so we know how to prevent and correct problems. This is the first step in the program.

Management Assistance

Adaptive management of your lake or stream involves looking at the conditions, identifying problems, and coming up with a plan of action. The Lake and Stream Management Program can assist your community in developing a management strategy. Because conditions change constantly, the strategy must adapt to stay effective. Our process not only helps you come up with a plan but sets up the framework to keep that plan current.

If you find that you need additional help, you can request it in writing per our program policy. This process allows the program to evaluate and respond to requests for help implementing management actions in a fair and orderly way. Because it’s voluntary and cooperative, your community and the County will bring resources to the table that help meet community and County goals. This part of the program requires the greatest organization and preparation.
